An episode of The Young Turks (TYT) really hit home with me because it really drove to the core of the problem I have with Hillary Clinton and her supporters – somewhere along the way, they just stopped being Progressive.
Ana Kasparian and Jimmy Dore expressed frustration about relationships with friends who support Clinton yet claim to be Progressives. Cenk Uygur appreciated their concerns and tossed in a touch of rationality as he discussed why these people – especially Millennials – may support her.
I can empathize very much with Kasparian and Dore here. Hillary is really just more of the same, or as Uygur says in explaining why her support exists among Progressives, she provides a “steady as we go” stance for those who may not want really radical change (for example, more wealthy liberals who stand to be taxed heavier).
Beyond that, her support among Progressives, absent the “old guard”, just makes no sense at all. The Democratic Party has become what the Republican Party used to be – keep things traditional and steady, no matter the cost.
In fact, Vice President Biden seemed to border on an endorsement of Sanders. As CNN reported:
“I like the idea of saying, ‘We can do much more,’ because we can,” Biden told The New York Times in an interview published Thursday.
Sanders’ critics — most notably surrogates for his primary opponent Hillary Clinton and the candidate, herself — often question how realistic his proposals are, but Biden dismissed that concern.
“I don’t think any Democrat’s ever won saying, ‘We can’t think that big — we ought to really downsize here because it’s not realistic,'” Biden said. “C’mon man, this is the Democratic Party! I’m not part of the party that says, ‘Well, we can’t do it.'”
What ever happened to that Democratic Party?
This generation of Millennials has entered the political process perhaps more informed than those previous as they entered in their times, and “steady as we go” to the detriment of necessary social change won’t work for the DNC much longer.
Kasparian, Dore – I’m with you. The logic of “Progressives” supporting Clinton entirely escapes me.
