Seeing political support waning in his own party, President Nixon saw the writing on the wall of certain impeachment and resigned on August 8, 1974.  Only two presidents, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, have been impeached – the former after three years in office and the latter after five.

Barely reaching five months in office, Trump may just be facing the same decision Nixon had in 1974 – resign, or be the most quickly impeached president in the history of the United States.

CNN is reporting today that former FBI Director James Comey will be providing bombshell testimony next week:

“Fired FBI director James Comey plans to testify publicly in the Senate as early as next week to confirm bombshell accusations that President Donald Trump pressured him to end his investigation into a top Trump aide’s ties to Russia, a source close to the issue said Wednesday.”

Comey has been speaking with Special Counsel Robert Mueller III, and this information was intentionally leaked.  The question is why?

Important to keep in mind is that Republicans currently control both the House and Senate.  They have been watching national discontent against Trump continue to build and lead to the lowest approval ratings of any president in history.  He hasn’t even received the standard “honeymoon” ratings typically seen.

This is a game of political survival in the midst of town halls where they are on the receiving end of that growing dissatisfaction.  The president will readily be thrown under the proverbial bus.

If Comey testifies that Trump pressured him to end his investigation into both Michael Flynn and Russia, felony conduct would come into play under 18 US Code 73 per obstruction of justice.

Trump threw outrageous slings and barbs at opponents during the GOP primaries.  We saw personal battles between them as he levied a while base of support against them and made conspiratorial allegations.  Chickens, as they say, come home to roost.

Could this be a message to the president as political support continues to wane in his own party?  What could it be?  Perhaps this:

This is your Nixon moment.  Resign, we’re coming.
