An estimated crowd of 27,000 people gathered in New York City’s Washington Square Park tonight for an event featuring celebrities supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders that culminated in a speech delivered by him.
The lineup included Vampire Weekend, Spike Lee, Rosario Dawson, Linda Sarsour, Shailene Woodley, Tim Robbins, and Graham Nash.
People, as well as news vehicle, were lining at by noon. The Secret Service opened the way for people to enter at 5:00 p.m.
The park is across the street from New York University and is known for street performers of all kinds in a daily social experiment of people of all stripes interacting.
The New York primary is slated for April 19 with a debate between Sanders and Clinton on April 14, and this crowd was clear in their intended support.
The event was not widely covered by mainstream media sources outside of a seemingly obligatory minute or two tip of the hat, but Bernie’s supporters and those personalities in attendance were charged for the evening in a record-setting crowd.
