In “What happened to boundaries?” (March 5, 2021, online Oakland Press) Cal Thomas compared the “boundaries” of “American culture” to the boundaries of sports games, speaking as if “American culture” is monolithic. Just as there is more than one sports game, there is more than one culture here, and like different games, different cultures have different “boundaries.”

The “boundaries” Mr. Thomas fears losing — the ones that prohibit LGBT “human behavior” and marriage — were imposed to maximize population increase, to supply kings with plenty of soldiers and laborers, in what is best described as a flesh-and-blood arms race.

Earth’s population is approaching 8 billion, and our activities are changing the environment we depend on for water and food (BOUNDARY). The flesh-and-blood arms race needs to end. Governments need to throw off theocratic traditions that oppose non-reproductive consensual adult sexual activity.

The United States is not and never has been a “Christian nation.” A close reading of the U.S. Constitution reveals not a single use of “Christian nation,” “Christian heritage,” “Christianity,” “Jesus Christ,” or “God,” and the First Amendment prohibits any establishment of religion (BOUNDARY).
