The upcoming races for state secretary of state will be referendums on the Big Lie.

In a 2018 Johns Hopkins Univerยญsity survey, more than 80 percent of respondยญents couldยญnโt name their state legisยญlatยญors. One-third didnโt know who their governor was. About the same proporยญtion couldยญnโt rememยญber who they voted for in down-ballot state races. In other words, Amerยญicยญans spent little time thinkยญing about state governยญment.
The intrinsยญicยญally partisan nature of the state secretยญary of state job has occaยญsionยญally brought some officeยญholdยญers to national attenยญtion. Kathยญerยญine Harris co-chaired George W. Bushโs Florยญida campaign in 2000, then played a key role in the recount (and was even portrayed by Joan Cusack on teleยญviยญsion!). Brian Kemp of Georยญgia drew critiยญcism when he overยญsaw his own elecยญtion to the governorยญship, superยญvising voter-roll purges that disproยญporยญtionยญately affected Black voters. Savvy insiders knew these were importยญant jobs.
After the 2020 elecยญtion, everyยญone knew. Donald Trumpโs postelecยญtion demand to โfind 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have, โ pracยญticยญally made Georยญgia Secretยญary of State Brad Raffenยญsperยญger into a houseยญhold name. By transยญformยญing a historยญicยญally nonparยญtisan minisยญterial duty โ the certiยญficยญaยญtion of elecยญtion results โ into a partisan high-wire act, Trump instantly made state secretยญary of state a high-profile post.
A new monthly series of Brenยญnan Center reports confirms that the stakes have been raised in races to overยญsee state elecยญtions. My colleague Ian Vandewalker found that across key battleยญground states, โcontriยญbuยญtions are three times higher than they were at this point in the 2018 cycle and eight times higher than 2014.* The numbers are particยญuยญlarly high in Arizona, Georยญgia, and Michigan.โ
Arizona Repubยญlican Mark Finchem already boasts six times as many donors as every candidยญate in the 2018 elecยญtion combined. (Heโs also retailed QAnon conspirยญacy theorยญies, accordยญing to CNN.)
Notably, funds are flowยญing not just from dark money sources and big donors. These races now attract donaยญtions from across the counยญtry. Two-thirds of Finchemโs donors live outside of Arizona. The two leadยญing fundraisers in the Georยญgia secretยญary of state race have already collecยญted more out-of-state money than the combined total of all candidยญates in the 2018 elecยญtion.
As an advocยญate for a robust partiยญcipยญatยญory demoยญcracy, I think itโs great that so many people are interยญested in down-ballot state elecยญtions. I am, however, concerned about the reason for this interest โ itโs clear that the Big Lie is drivยญing these donaยญtions. Finchem has built his candidยญacy around a promยญise to โdecerยญtify three 2020 county elecยญtions, โ and in Michigan, Kristina Karamo has said voting machines in the state could have flipped 200,000 votes to Joe Biden. For their part, Demoยญcrats are raisยญing huge sums by arguing that their opponยญents represยญent a mortal threat to demoยญcracy. For example, Reginยญald Boldยญing, one of Finchemโs opponยญents, ran an ad warnยญing, โThe fate of our demoยญcracy is on the line right now.โ
Their tradiยญtionยญally low profile notwithยญstandยญing, secretยญarยญies of state wield signiยญficยญant power over our elecยญtions. They overยญsee voter regisยญtraยญtion, mainยญtain voter dataยญbases, and manage elecยญtions themยญselves. The latest Brenยญnan Center report paints a worryยญing picture of an increasยญingly partisan approach to this work. Elecยญtion adminยญisยญtraยญtion decisions should be based on solid evidยญence and clear standยญards, not specยญuยญlaยญtion, fear-mongerยญing, or outright lies.
