Now is a time to question the myths and stories we live by. I find myself questioning a long-held belief in moral progress, memorably put by Martin Luther King, Jr: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
In the face of today’s challenges, it is too easy to lose faith in King’s vision of a better future. But that is exactly what we need to guide us through current messes and upheavals. Rather than abandoning King’s explicitly moral affirmation of progress, we need to double down on it. We shouldn’t be tempted by the frequently cynical visions of the future trafficked by today’s tech visionaries.
